In the latter moments of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Grandmother Quill was played by Karen Abercrombie, a renowned Christian actress best recognized for her parts in well-known faith-based films like 2015’s War Room and the 2023 film Heaven Sent (now available on home video). Grandmother Quill is Peter Quill/Star-adored Lord’s grandma and the widow of Grandfather Quill (played by Chris Pratt).
Abercrombie expressed her gratitude for being a part of the movie in an interview with Christian Headlines. She revealed that following a good audition, she was offered the part. She was contacted by one of her representatives who excitedly embraced the chance. After the audition, she continued to communicate with Marvel Studios, and soon she heard the wonderful news that filming would start in Atlanta.
For Abercrombie, being involved in a major Marvel film is not just about personal achievement but also an opportunity to spread light and love while utilizing her God-given gifts. She believes that these kinds of projects can play a role in reclaiming territory from the darkness within the realm of entertainment and media. Abercrombie stated, “It’s an opportunity to be what we profess to be. Even if you’re not running, grabbing people, taking them to the back and trying to save them or share the message of Christ, we can do that in how we respond.”
One of Abercrombie’s recent faith-based projects, the romantic comedy Heaven Sent, holds a special place in her heart. In the film, she portrays a single grandmother who finds love once again. Abercrombie intended the story to bring encouragement, particularly to older individuals who are single or raising their grandchildren. She described it as “about finding love a second time around.”
Abercrombie’s acting talents, which she considers a gift from God, hold a significant purpose for her. She views her work in the industry as a form of ministry and strives to honor the Giver by using her gifts to the best of her ability. For Abercrombie, even though she may be speaking someone else’s words, delivering her performances with excellence becomes a form of praise.
