What Did Jesus Do When He Rose From The Dead

What Did Jesus Do When He Rose From The Dead

Introduction

The story of Jesus rising from the dead can seem like a somewhat strange tale. I mean, how did he do it? And what exactly happened after he came back to life? We know that his resurrection was the ultimate proof of God’s power over death, and that it also gave believers hope for eternal life. But what really went down on that first Easter morning? Here’s my best guess:

Jesus Appears To Mary Magdalene At The Tomb

After Jesus was buried, Mary Magdalene and the other women returned to the tomb. A great earthquake occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled back the stone away from the entrance to the tomb, and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow (Matthew 28:2-3).

The women ran away from him because they were terrified; yet he called out to them in a loud voice: “Do not be afraid! Go tell my brothers that they should go into Galilee where they will see me” (Matthew 28:5-7).

Mary Magdalene went right away to tell Peter and John what had happened but they did not believe her story (Matthew 28:10-11). She went back again with two more disciples but when she told them what had happened “they could not believe either” (Luke 24:11).

Jesus Appears To Peter

Now, after Jesus had risen from the dead and gone to heaven, he appeared to Peter. This was on a day when Peter and some of the other disciples were together in a house in Jerusalem. They were behind locked doors because they were afraid of being arrested by the Jews.

The Lord stood beside Peter as he slept. He said to him, “Simon (whose name was changed to Cephas), are you asleep? Do not sleep! I am here; do not be afraid!” Then he woke up and saw the Lord standing there with his sword drawn in his hand stretched out toward heaven.

Then the next thing we see is that Jesus says to them: ‘Peace be with you!’ After saying this he showed them his hands and feet so that they could see for themselves that he was truly alive again; then he disappeared from their sight.’

Jesus Appears To The Eleven Apostles And Others At A Mountain In Galilee

After about a week, Jesus appeared to the eleven apostles and others at a mountain in Galilee. He told them that he would send the Holy Spirit to them. The apostles were worried because they were afraid that they would be persecuted by the Jews again if they stayed in Jerusalem.

Jesus also gave them the Great Commission: he told them to go out into all the world and teach people about him (Matthew 28:16-20). The disciples worshiped him as soon as they saw him standing there alive, but some doubted whether or not it was really Jesus! Many other people had seen Jesus after his death on Good Friday and thought it was just an angelic vision; angels looked like humans with wings back then!

Jesus Appears To The Apostles Inside A Locked Room In Jerusalem

The first appearance of Jesus to a group of people following his resurrection is described in John 20:19-23. The apostle Thomas was not present at this appearance, which took place inside a locked room in Jerusalem. Jesus told the apostles that he had risen from the dead and had appeared to Mary Magdalene earlier that same day. He then said that if they believed in him, they would do greater works than he did; meaning that they would be able to perform miracles as well (John 14:12).

Jesus then ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9), where he sent down the Holy Spirit upon his followers on Pentecost (Acts 2). In order for them to spread this message far and wide, Jesus gave them power through his Spirit so they could accomplish their mission successfully throughout history!

There are 5 recorded resurrection appearances of Christ.

There are 5 recorded resurrection appearances of Christ.

  • Luke 24:13-49, John 20, Acts 1:3 (these three have a similar pattern)
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (this one is different)
  • Matthew 28:16-20 (similar to #2)

Conclusion

What did Jesus do when he rose from the dead and appeared to his disciples? He wanted to show them that all the predictions in Scripture were true and fulfilled. He wanted to give them hope and peace, which they could spread throughout their lives as they told others about it. In addition, he wanted everyone who heard him speak or saw what happened on Easter Sunday morning to know that death is not final but instead just a passage into another life where suffering ceases to exist. We can find comfort knowing what happened at that time because it means our Lord has conquered sin forever!
