As you drive down the road, have you ever taken the time to count the number of churches you pass by? Perhaps you have wondered why there are so many different churches right across the street from one another, sometimes even three or four of them? Is there ever a time when you wonder if it is even biblical? The truth is that this week, that has been exactly what has been on my mind.
During a drive across the town where I live, I counted 13 churches in the area. There are a wide variety of denominations or sects of denominations within each denomination. Several of them were quite old, some of them were brand new, and some of them were still under construction. Even though I noticed that most of the signs were almost the same, I did not pay much attention to it. A church’s name (usually no fewer than three or four words) is displayed with a marquee below it that contains a phrase that has little to no depth to it in the statement that is being made. As there were charismatic people, conservative people, contemporary people, and old school people, there were also some who were charismatic. While some of them were closed most of the time, with the exception of Sundays, others were open most of the time during the week.
It was at this point that I started asking myself “Is this biblical? ”. According to what I found, the answer to that question is most certainly not. There was no end to the number of times I returned to the scene in John 17 where Jesus prayed to the Father. As He prayed for His disciples, He also prayed for those who would follow Him in the future.

The prayer of Jesus was that we would be brought into unity; for us to be one as they are one. The Lord also told His disciples, “They will know that you are My disciples by the love that you have for one another.” (John 13:35).
